Part 2: Exploring Live-NEC Using the Enhanced NATO SAS-050 Approach Space

Having defined a set of social network metrics that map onto the NATO SAS-050 approach space, and subjected those metrics to a test with theoretical data, an opportunity now arises to scale up the analysis considerably and to explore their efficacy and usefulness with realistically sized ‘actual’ command and control organisations. This occurs by embedding the approach developed in the previous section within a much bigger analysis based on a large scale military exercise. Unlike the previous section which was able to put forward a number of specific empirical questions which could be subject to a direct test, this section is entirely exploratory. Here we use the extended NATO SAS-050 approach to examine the simple ‘what’ of live-NEC in relation to its position within the approach space and its underlying dynamics (e.g., its agility and tempo). The next two chapters look in more detail at the ‘why’.
